12 year old Orcas Island resident Roo Smith, a soon-to-be 7th grader at Orcas Christian School, secured his first hole-in-one at about 6:30PM on August 4th, 2009.
Hole Number 5 is a 153 yard downhill par 3, slanting right. Roo used his older sister's Callaway Big Bertha six iron, took his swing at his ball - a Nike Super Soft PD1. As Roo describes it, "it like went through two branches and then it landed and hit a pinecone or something - it had a pretty unnatural bounce - and then rolled down the hill near the green and slowed, then dropped in to the cup." Roo continues, "I felt really happy and sorta light headed." As luck would have it, the owner of Orcas Island Country Golf Club, Matt Taylor, was in a foursome on the next hole, when Roo calmly informed him, "Matt, I just got a hole in one". Taylor chuckled as if it were a joke, and then Roo walked over to the cup and pulled out the ball.
